Automatic Strainers

An Alternative to Duplex Strainers

Cutaway of a model 2596 automatic strainer
Automatic or Backwashing Strainers are designed for applications requiring continuous operation and are an alternative to large duplex strainers.  Backwashing Strainers are available for pipeline sizes from 2" to 48", although at a starting cost of about $8,000 for a 2" cast iron unit, they usually become a cost efficient alternative to duplex strainers for 8" and larger size pipelines.

Another reason to use automatic backwashing strainers is for high solids loading that would otherwise require frequent basket cleaning.  Higher flow rate applications require larger baskets, which can be heavy and a burden to remove and clean.  Automatic strainers eliminate the manual process of monitoring and cleaning baskets.

A typical control package costs $5,000 to $10,000 and enables backwashing based upon a field settable differential pressure which is a reflection of the solids loading in the strainer.  Timed actuation and a manual override are also part of a typical control system.

Although most of our automatic strainers are supplied in iron and steel for large flow rate water intake lines, we offer automatic strainers made from in 316SS and other alloys suitable for potable water and chemically aggressive fluids or environemnts.

There different types of Automatic Strainers
Some, like the one above, use differential pressure to reverse flow through the basket openings.  We also offer less expensive and simpler designs called Flushing Strainers which enable you to "flush" material accumulated within the basket through the bottom of the strainer.  The cleaning action is very similar to flushing of a toilet.

Microfiltration and Mechanically Cleaned Strainers
Mechanically cleaned strainers physically scrape away collected solids to be purged from the system, this method minimizes the process fluid loss and therefore is well suited for treated water and chemistries being processed that aren't "flushable".

The last type of automatic strainer we offer is referred to as a Tubular Backwashing Filter. These are filters designed for high flow rate microfiltration applications and utilize permanent filter cartridges which are intermittently backwashed by controlling the flow path of the process fluid for each element.  We offer internally and externally backwashed designs to handle everything from dirty paper mill water to highly viscous fluids like Plastisol.

Automatic self-cleaning strainers are used in nearly every industry to strain fresh, brackish, or salt intake water for plant services, cooling, process & fire protection:
